The limp performance of the electronics sector last month could be partly due to the high Singapore dollar and falling sales to Japan. -- ST PHOTO: ALPHONSUS CHERN EXPORTS grew better than expected in March although the limp performance of the electronics sector has puzzled some economists. The electronics slump could be partly due to the high Singapore dollar and falling sales to the battered Japanese economy. But much of the slack was taken up by other sectors, with non-oil domestic exports (NODX) growing 10 per cent last month compared with last year. This is double the 5 per cent expansion tipped by private sector economists. Export growth was driven by the non-electronics sector, which expanded 24.5 per cent, led by ships, specialised machinery and chemicals, said trade agency International Enterprise (IE) Singapore yesterday.
