S$86m retail sector productivity plan announced

SINGAPORE: An S$86 million plan to support productivity improvements in the retail sector was announced on Tuesday by Minister of State, for Trade and Industry and Manpower, Lee Yi Shyan. The plan, which is spearheaded by the National Productivity Continuing Education Council and supported by SPRING Singapore, aims to improve the retail sector's value add per worker by about 25 per cent by 2015. Speaking at the event, Mr Lee emphasised how simplifying company operations through technology can increase productivity. A pilot project by departmental store Robinson's was given as an example. The store implemented a new automated system to reduce human error and processing time for staff and suppliers.
