Election deposit raised to $16,000 #SGelections

EACH candidate in the coming polls on May 7 will have to put up an election deposit of $16,000. This is an increase of $2,500 from the $13,500 required in the previous general election. The new sum is 8 per cent of the total allowances paid to a Member of Parliament in the preceding year, rounded to the nearest $500. It is in accordance with the Parliamentary Elections Act, said a press statement from the Prime Minister's Office on Tuesday. The deposit will be forfeited should the candidate in a single-seat constituency or a team in a GRC secures fewer than 12.5 per cent of the votes in their constituency. As in the last election in 2006, there will be nine nomination centres where candidates will hand in their nomination papers on April 27, next Wednesday.
