Our reader says: #SGelections isn't about Chen Show Mao or Tin Pei Ling. It is about the future of S'pore.

DR NG Eng Hen opined yesterday that potential candidates need to re-establish their roots in Singapore first before they are qualified to talk about candidacy ('Writer's query on Chen reasonable, says PAP'). He questions how Mr Chen Show Mao, who has spent significant time outside Singapore, can identify with the aspirations of Singaporeans and have a stake in the country's future. I would suggest Singaporeans often feel most Singaporean when they spend an extended period away from home. Living in a foreign land and culture strengthens one's national identity, especially as one feels and recognises that one is different from the others. I say this from both personal experience and sentiments shared by my friends who have done the same.
