OUR current bus operators have failed to show any significant improvement in efficiency and service since the liberalisation of the public transport sector ('WP call to nationalise public transport a step backwards'; April 16). There is an old Hokkien adage among heartland aunties that describes our bus service: 'No come, no come, one come, two, three come' - which means buses tend to follow closely one after another after a long wait. The reliability and frequency of our bus services have not improved despite all the measures taken in recent years. There have been great technological advances in tracking systems over the last decade to address reliability and frequency problems. However, because of the lack of any real competition, and being public-listed companies which are profit-driven, the two transport operators are slow to spend any money to fix such issues.
