SINGAPORE - It will not just be a raid on Singapore's reserves, but an illegal one at that. National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan's latest response to the Workers' Party on the hot topic of housing was also his most detailed yet, as he elaborated on how lowering the price of land for public housing would undermine the Constitution. In a statement to the media, Mr Mah emphasised how land value is determined by the Chief Valuer, an appointment protected and subject to the approval of the Elected President. As a result, the Government "cannot arbitrarily price State land higher or lower as it pleases, nor can it appoint a Chief Valuer to do its bidding". Instead, the Government has to pay the full value back to the reserves.
