Malay community urged to focus on broader issue

DR YAACOB Ibrahim has urged the Malay community not to focus only on the People's Action Party's two new Malay candidates but the broader issue of leadership renewal for Singapore. In an interview with Malay daily Berita Harian, the Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs said Malay MPs had interviewed 61 potential Malay/Muslim candidates from various sectors. The PAP is fielding two deemed suitable, but and some younger ones may be fielded in the next round, he indicated, stressing that continuous efforts are made to identify suitable Malay candidates. 'There are some young ones that have very good potential. We encourage them to remain active at the ground,' he said in the interview published on Friday. 'So when the next election comes, they will be about mid-30s - just the right time to see them again.' Read the full story in Saturday's edition of The Straits Times.
