MTI minister rebuts SDP candidate's proposals

TRADE and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang on Saturday rebutted a proposal by an opposition candidate to phase out the manufacturing sector, noting that the sector makes up a quarter of Singapore's GDP and provides many high quality jobs for the country. It also contributes more than half a million jobs to Singapore, of which over half goes to Singaporeans, he said, adding that the sector ensures the diversity of Singapore's economy. Speaking to reporters after the official opening of the Clementi Public Library at The Clementi Mall, he said he strongly disagreed with the call from Singapore Democratic Party's new candidate, Mr Tan Jee Say, 57, a former MTI official, and urged Singaporeans to study his proposals carefully.
