Expert moots single entrance exam for higher education: The other "essential steps for progress in higher educat...

NEW DELHI: Terming multiple entrance examinations as "a menace", the chairman of the science advisory council to the Prime Minister, Prof CNR Rao, today recommended the government replace them with one national examination that would assess the eligibility of candidates' admission to higher education institutions. Stating that "young people suffer so much to succeed" in entrance examinations, he said that it is important to re-look the entire examination system, including the system of final examinations, entrance examinations, qualifying examinations, selection examinations and so on. The other "essential steps for progress in higher education" in the "check-list" given by Prof Rao to the human resources development (HRD) ministry include quality up-grade of institutions, diversification of areas of study, serious overhauling of the administration of the education system,...
