(TODAY) Minister rebuts ideas put forward by SDP candidate

SINGAPORE - The Government has had its eye on the 46-page document ever since it was posted online in February. But, now that its author, former senior civil servant Tan Jee Say, 57, has entered the political arena, as a candidate for the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), the Government felt it had to rebut the ideas he had put forward, said Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang yesterday. Mr Tan's ideas included shifting out the manufacturing sector and turning Singapore into a services hub, to reduce its dependance on foreign labour and reduce the economic volatility associated with the rise and fall of the global economy. Speaking at the end of a community event, Mr Lim gave a point-by-point rebuttal of Mr Tan's "radical" economic paper at a roundtable with reporters.
