S'pore manufacturing output up 22% on-year in March

SINGAPORE : Singapore's manufacturing output jumped 22 per cent in March, bolstered by a strong rebound in the biomedical sector. But economists said the growth in manufacturing output will not be sustained. This is because biomedical sector's performance is unpredictable and may ease in coming months. Biomedical output rose 57 per cent, versus a decline of 8.9 per cent in the previous month. Total manufacturing output, excluding biomedical manufacturing, grew just 6.1 per cent. Other manufacturing sectors posted modest output increases. Precision engineering output grew 8.6 per cent. Electronics output went up by 6.9 per cent, while chemicals output rose 6.8 per cent. Total manufacturing growth is expected to soften also due to higher oil prices and supply chain disruptions resulting from the Japan quake.
