Reconstruction of Japan's eastern region to take at least 10 years

TOKYO : The reconstruction of Japan's eastern region is expected to take at least 10 years. That is the assessment from the Reconstruction Design Council, appointed by Prime Minister Naoto Kan. Prime Minister Kan said he is committed to redesigning northeastern Japan which was devastated by the massive earthquake and tsunami last month. He has commissioned a group of academics, architects, priests and governors to lay out a specific reconstruction plan by June. Group leader Professor Jun Iio of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies wants the reconstruction to serve as a model for the rest of Japan. Professor Iio believes the disaster region represents Japan's weakness, with a high proportion of the elderly and very low birthrate.
