Two views on Singapore's future #sgelections

Singapore Democratic Party candidate Tan Jee Say has proposed a wide-ranging plan to transform Singapore's economy. On Saturday, Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang offered a point-by-point rebuttal to some of Mr Tan's suggestions key proposals. Here is a look at some of their differing views. THE MANUFACTURING SECTOR Tan Jee Say: The economy has become more volatile in recent years, with Singapore experiencing three recessions in the past 15 years, in contrast to only one recession in the years between 1965 and 1995. A major contributor to the increased economic volatility was manufacturing, which has been promoted by the Government in the past five decades as a key pillar of its economic growth strategy. Lim Hng Kiang: Manufacturing, which contributes 20-25 per cent of Singapore's gross domestic product (GDP), also generates more than half a million jobs, of which ...
