Taiwan gets first female presidential candidate

TAIPEI: Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party is nominating chairwoman Tsai Ing Wen as its presidential candidate for 2012. Ms Tsai is Taiwan's first ever female presidential candidate. The 54-year-old beat her opponent Su Tseng Chang by one percentage point in an island-wide poll conducted by the DPP. She will run against President Ma Ying-jeou, who has announced his bid for a second term. "Her victory is largely due to her fresh image, her international perspective, as well as her performance in getting the DPP back on its feet over the past few years," said National Taiwan University Professor Wang Yeh Lih. "Tsai Ing Wen doesn't have any political baggage like others do. So if she comes into power, various factions will have a chance to benefit, like former premiers like Frank Hsieh and Yu Shyi Kun," said National Taiwan University Professor Chang Ya Chung.
