SINGAPORE - Two months after a fund for the elderly immobile was unveiled in the Government's Budget, the first of the S$10 million set aside has gone to beneficiaries from NTUC Eldercare. The labour movement cooperative is providing 500 mobility aids to 500 eligible elderly citizens aged 60 years and above. It will match about S$25,000 from the Senior Mobility Fund (SMF) with a co-payment. Ten elderly citizens received assistive devices such as wheelchairs and wheeled walkers yesterday. One of them, Mr Bassir Abdullah, 55, has been confined to his one-room flat for years, due to multiple health conditions such as diabetes. Unable to afford a wheelchair, he has now been given one through NTUC Eldercare's use of the fund.
