Singapore heads to history-making polls on May 7

GENERAL Election 2011 makes history with all seats but Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency (GRC) contested - and it was only because the candidates from the opposition were late by 35 seconds in filing their nomination papers on Wednesday. The last time Singapore saw a 100 per cent contest rate was in 1963, when all 51 seats in the Legislative Assembly had contenders. In the general election of 1972, 57 of the 65 seats were contested. The biggest news on Nomination Day emerged from the Deyi Secondary School, one of nine nomination centres. Workers' Party (WP) chief Low Thia Khiang showed up with the opposition party's chairman Sylvia Lim, corporate lawyer Chen Show Mao, Mr Pritam Singh, a postgraduate law student, and Mr Muhamad Faisal Manap, a freelance counsellor.
