Singapore's economy has now rebounded from Q1 2009's lows, & is now in 'more advanced stage of recovery': MAS

Consumer demand drove Singapore's trade growth in the first quarter. -- ST PHOTO: KEVIN LIM SINGAPORE'S trade growth in the first quarter was driven by consumer demand, unlike last year when expansion was fuelled mainly by companies restocking inventories. This is the view of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in its half-yearly macroeconomic review released yesterday. The central bank said the Singapore economy, having undergone several phases of growth, has now rebounded from the lows of the first quarter in 2009. It said the economy had progressed to 'a more advanced stage of recovery in (the first quarter of this year)'. Although it said the economy had enjoyed a 'powerful' boost from the global inventory cycle in the first half of last year, it added that the boost was 'transient'.
