Japanese drug smuggler gets 18 years in Indonesia - Straits Times

Morita Yuki, 35, was arrested in November last year after landing in Bali from Bangkok with 5.9kg of hashish, which police valued at US$410,000 (S$505,000), hidden in the lining of his suitcase. 'The defendant has given an opportunity for illegal drugs to be distributed in Indonesia and that's against the government's efforts to eradicate drug use,' chief judge Agus Subekti told Denpasar district court. The sentence was three years higher than the prosecutors' recommendation. Defence lawyer Stefanus Tobas described the sentence as 'too heavy' and said he would appeal.
