HANOI - TWO VIETNAMESE fishermen died and a third was seriously injured as they tried to cut open a Vietnam War-era shell on the country's south-central coast, an official said on Thursday. The men had discovered an American-made 105 millimetre projectile and were attempting to extract the explosives and salvage the metal when it blew up on Tuesday, said Tran Van Hoa, head of Cam Binh commune. 'The victims, aged 24 and 25, were young so they seemed not to be aware of the danger of the shell. The older fishermen never touch these things,' Mr Hoa told AFP on the phone. 'They found the shell in the sea, in an area where authorities already recommended that people should not approach because of wartime unexploded bombs and shells,' he added.
