'Co-drivers' will lead to a crash: Shanmugam #SGelections

SINGAPOREANS can now decide if they want a co-driver who is 'slapping and kicking' the driver, said Minister K Shanmugam on Friday, drawing a line on the ongoing war of words over a driving analogy between the People's Action Party (PAP) and the Workers' Party (WP). Pointing to WP's intention to be a 'co-driver' in the car, rather than just a 'spare tyre' - as its party leader Low Thia Kiang had originally suggested - Mr Shanmugam said: 'It has taken two days for the spare tyre to morph into a co-driver.' In written remarks to the media on Friday, the Home Affairs and Law Minister asked: 'How often have you seen a car being driven by two drivers, fighting with each other for the wheel?' The analogy used by WP Low TK on the co-driver slapping the driver is, in my opinion, an outstandingly witty and humorous one. It adds a lot of color to this campaign. Shanmugam and Raymond Lim sadly misread this analogy. I wonder if our ministers have taken a class in English language or literature. Do they realize the purpose of an analogy or a metaphor? It is meant to be interpreted metaphorically, NOT literally! Sadly, our dear minister misses out the humor and the wit involved. As a politically neutral observer, I don’t see any subversive use of the word “slap” in this context. Well, I suppose we can't blame them. We are all victims of a pure utilitarian ideology, and have failed to appreciate wit and humor anymore. Creativity need not carry a $ value. Low TK has demonstrated it wittingly through this analogy. Is this a first world society – economically, yes, but otherwise?
