6.1-magnitude quake shakes southern Panama

WASHINGTON: A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 hit Panama early on Saturday, the US government reported. The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 3:19 am local time (0819 GMT), was located 179 kilometers (111 miles) south of the city of David, near the border with Costa Rica, according to the US Geological Survey. There was no immediate report of casualties or damage. The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
