NEW DELHI: Christians in India are eagerly looking forward to the beatification ceremony of the late Pope John Paul II on Sunday. He is best remembered in the country for fast-tracking the sainthood of Mother Teresa. The late Pope John Paul II was the first pontiff in history to have visited India twice - first in 1986 and then in 1999. Many still remember him clearly for his energy and warmth as he criss-crossed the country, mingling freely with crowds, much to the dismay of his security personnel. In Kolkata, he helped Mother Teresa and her missionaries of charity to serve an evening meal to the poor and terminally ill. While addressing her beatification ceremony, the Pope declared that in modern times, "God inspires new models of sainthood."
