I think Mah Bow Tan has gone a bit too far the other way round. Nobody would blame him if after six months of working, a couple couldnt afford a flat. In fact if a flat is affordable six months after a couple starts work, it would be an undesirable thing because there is no more incentive to work, life is too easy. As a general rule, i think every reasonable person will accept that to be able to afford a flat, a couple has to work for a couple of years. Nothing is free. In other words, i think most citizens will be quite happy if generally they are able to afford a flat after working 3 to 5 years. And this takes into account other expenses like stamp fees, renovation costs, reserves for marriage expenses, simple vacations etc. and definitley not a 30 year loan. So it’s ridiculous in the first place why the minsiter wants to tell singpaoreans that couples can afford a flat ...
