RP: Replace Workfare with minimum wage

A MINIMUM wage system should replace the Workfare Income Supplement (WIS) scheme here, said Reform Party (RP) chief Kenneth Jeyaretnam at a rally on Monday night. He was standing his ground despite comments that his party's proposals are out of step with those of other opposition parties. Mr Jeyaretnam, who was speaking to a crowd at West Coast Park, pointed out loopholes in the WIS scheme. He is contesting the West Coast GRC against a People's Action Party (PAP) team led by Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr Lim Hng Kiang. Mr Jeyaretnam, 52, noted that it is possible for an employee to receive the same salary even after Workfare, should his employer choose to cut his initial pay. 'But if an employer is faced with a choice between a Singaporean and a foreign worker but has to pay the same wage to both, he might choose to employ the Singaporean,' he added. Mr Jeyaretnam's ...
