Corporate Japan pitches in to help disaster victims

TOKYO: Flat screen TV sets and dry batteries were some of the items that were among the first batch of relief goods sent to northeastern Japan, devastated by a powerful earthquake and tsunami. Japanese electronics company, Panasonic, even couriered products not normally on sale, like solar-powered LED lanterns, to help in the relief effort. Joe Tsuchiya, General Manager of Corporate Communications at Panasonic, described how the lantern works. "What's been generated into the solar panel during the day is charged into the lithium ion battery. Then in the evening, you push the button. The light turns on like this. When fully charged the product can be used up to five hours." The company has donated similar lanterns to Uganda, India and Tanzania.
