Four die after eating at Japan barbecue restaurants (via ST iPhone App)

TOKYO - AT LEAST four people died and 21 others are in a serious condition after a string of food poisoning cases at a barbecue restaurant chain, officials and news reports said on Thursday. A woman in her 70s was confirmed dead from food poisoning on Thursday after dining at an outlet of the Yakiniku-zakaya Ebisu chain in Toyama, central Japan, on April 23, a local government official said. A family member of the woman and a six-year-old boy also died after eating beef at the restaurant, while another boy was dead after dining at the chain's restaurant in Fukui, central Japan, news reports said. Twenty-one others were in serious condition in the food poisoning outbreak, with E. coli bacteria including the O-111 and O-157 strains detected in many of the cases, Japan's public broadcaster NHK and Kyodo News reported. -- AFP
