OVER A decade ago, provision shop owners would drop cash from customers into milk powder tins on a pulley system. Today, these shops have been replaced by minimarts, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. He cited this change to show how local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are under pressure to become more efficient and productive so as to survive in a changing economy. In another illustration, Mr Lee noted how working women are shunning wet markets for the convenience of supermarkets, and people are turning their backs on traditional barber shops for outlets that offer $10 haircuts in 10 minutes. 'It is clear that SMEs must find new ways to thrive,' he said in Chinese at yesterday's National Day Rally.
