Asian shares close lower

TOKYO Japanese shares closed 1.45 per cent lower on Friday with exporters falling due to a stronger yen while oil companies and trading houses were hit by a sharp fall in commodities prices, brokers said. The benchmark Nikkei index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 145.00 points to close at 9,859.20, off Monday's close above 10,000 points. The Topix index of all first section shares was down 1.05 per cent or 9.05 points at 856.50. HONG KONG Hong Kong shares dropped 0.44 per cent on Friday, in line with regional markets, as resource firms were hit by heavy losses in commodity prices amid concerns over the global downturn. The benchmark Hang Seng Index fell 102.47 points to 23,159.14 on turnover of HK$70.28 billion (S$11.2 billion). SHANGHAI Chinese shares closed down 0.30 per cent.
