#Singapore plans 4 laws 2 support plea bargaining In #Malaysia, we await coming into force of CPC (Amendment) Act 2010.

THE Attorney-General aims to put laws in place to support plea bargaining by next year and is studying models abroad. Attorney-General Sundaresh Menon said the move was meant to give a formal structure to the scheme after it was first raised by the Chief Justice late last year. A plea bargain takes place in a criminal case where the prosecutor offers a defendant the chance to plead guilty, usually to a lesser charge, or the original charge with the recommendation of a sentence lighter than the maximum. Mr Menon, who described the plan as one of the 'signature projects for the year', said a study mission to the United States was undertaken last month to understand its system. He noted some 95 per cent of cases there were resolved through plea bargaining and there were benefits and ideas that could be developed.
