EVEN before polling stations opened on Saturday morning at 8am, Singaporeans were queuing outside them, keen to have their say on their choice for parliament. By noon, despite the blazing sun, more than 47 per cent of an eligible 2.21 million voters had been to the polls, an elections spokesman said. Many of them will be voting for the first time, in the most hotly contested general elections since Singapore's independence, with 82 out of 87 seats being contested. At the last general election, about 1.22 million Singaporeans voted when 47 of 84 seats were contested.
