[CNA] GE: China-based S'poreans cast their votes in Shanghai

SHANGHAI: Singaporeans based overseas can vote at nine overseas polling centres. The polling centre in Shanghai saw some 10 voters streaming into the Consulate even before voting began at 8am. The first voter arrived at 7.45am. Many were excited by what they felt was a different election scene this year. Singaporeans based in Suzhou arrived in big groups after traveling one and a half hours to the Consulate in Shanghai. However, some Singaporeans were turned away as they had not registered online as overseas voters by the April 19 deadline. There are an estimated 20,000 Singaporeans in China with about 10,000 living in and around Shanghai. Figures for the total number of voters who turned up Saturday, or the breakdown of the number of votes for the different constituencies are not available.
