Singapore opposition eyes improved election result

Singapore's ruling People's Action Party (PAP) secured a fresh five-year mandate Sunday after clinching a clear majority of the 87 parliament seats, an official election tally showed. With the count still under way, unofficial results showed the PAP heading for victory in 81 seats. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong thanked voters in his constituency for their support in Saturday's polls after being re-elected with a 69 percent share of the vote in the district, up from 66 percent in 2006. But the PAP suffered a setback when it lost a multiple-seat ward for the first time to the opposition, according to unofficial counts carried by pro-government media and independent websites. The loss of the five-seat district to the Workers' Party would mean Foreign Minister George Yeo, one of the most senior members of Lee's cabinet, would be out of a job.
