Opposition veteran's GRC gamble fails #SGelections
OPPOSITION veteran Chiam See Tong's political journey ended in the early hours of Sunday. The final hurrah for Singapore's longest-serving opposition politician was not to be. The 76-year-old's gamble on winning a GRC did not pay off. Both he and his wife, Mrs Lina Chiam, were defeated at the ballot box by their PAP opponents. Mr Chiam and his team from the Singapore People's Party (SPP) lost the contest for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, garnering 43.1 per cent of the vote. Mrs Chiam, on her part, was edged out by the PAP's Mr Sitoh Yih Pin in the neighbouring Potong Pasir single-seat ward that her husband previously held, by just 114 votes.
