From Saturday, active servicemen and NSmen can bring their camera-enabled smartphones into 14 army camps. This marks a departure for the Ministry of Defence (Mindef), which has until now been keeping a tight rein on the use of new technology and media within army camps. The Straits Times broke the story on Aug 17 on the impending relaxation of the ban, which Mindef confirmed on Friday. The pilot implementation, to be reviewed in six to nine months, sees the introduction of "green" and "red" zones to segregate areas where smartphones are allowed and where a blanket ban on camera-enabled smartphones remains intact.
