It is official: Thailand will hold its national elections on July 3. Parliament was dissolved on May 10, after 30 months under the Abhisit Vejjajiva administration marked by bloody protests and social and political polarisation. The elections will be Thailand's second since the 2006 coup. In recent weeks, rumours of another military intervention have been rife, underscoring the armed forces' immense influence in politics. For supporters of the Abhisit government, the timing is perfect. His government had implemented effective economic policies; even at the height of the Thai crisis, economic growth was steady. The conflict with Cambodia, although jeopardising bilateral ties, permitted Mr Abhisit to play a nationalistic card.
