Question from our reader: Can airport security officers rummage through the bag of a passenger without permission?

I AM largely impressed with Changi Airport's cleanliness and comprehensive suite of amenities. However, a negative experience during a security screening process while I was boarding a flight on Sunday has marred my impression of it. After my bag was screened, it was detained by the security screening officer, who mumbled some inaudible words. The officer grew flustered and said 'Spray, spray' when responding to my queries. Then she opened my bag and rummaged through its contents without asking for my permission. It turned out that the offending item was a deodorant bottle that had been left in a compartment of the bag from an earlier trip, and which I have forgotten about. While I support the rationale for appropriate security screening prior to boarding of flights and have no objections to the confiscation of the deodorant bottle, the process could have been handled in a...
