Top UN official says Myanmar signs "encouraging"

YANGON: A visiting top UN official said Thursday that recent signals from Myanmar's new army-backed government were "very encouraging", after talks with democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi. "The government has made some very interesting statements... which are very encouraging," Vijay Nambiar, chief of staff to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, told reporters after meeting Suu Kyi. But he added that it was important to watch whether there was real progress in areas such as human rights, notably whether the government will release Myanmar's more than 2,200 political prisoners. Rights campaigners warned Nambiar's visit could be exploited by Myanmar's leaders. "It depends on the action of the government.
