(CNA|sg) Singapore Red Cross raises $30m for Japan's quake and tsunami victims

SINGAPORE : The Singapore Red Cross has raised $30 million to help survivors of the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan's Tohoku region on 11 March this year. This is the amount of donations the organisation has received till end-April. In a statement, the Red Cross says close to $1.5 million has been disbursed as emergency relief, providing basic necessities to Japanese families placed in temporary housing. The remaining monies will aid early recovery. The plans include construction of a night-time medical centre which was partially destroyed by the tsunami, purchasing and distribution of nursing beds to the affected municipalities and procuring vehicles for social welfare institutions, to facilitate the transport for the elderly and the disabled, and providing nursing care support for vulnerable groups.
