Political winds of change sweep through W Bengal and Tamil Nadu

DELHI : Winds of change are sweeping two major states in India. In the east, the Left front government has been brought down after three decades of rule in West Bengal. And in the south, Congress ally, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party is on its way out of Tamil Nadu after being linked to a multi-billion dollar telecom scam. The Trinamool Congress made history by ending 34 years of uninterrupted Communist rule in West Bengal. The party led by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee bagged over 200 seats in the 294 member assembly. She was once written off when her party won just one seat in the 2004 national elections. But she returned to the limelight two years ago, when she plunged into the land agitation movement against the government.
