Don't be so quick to judge Singaporeans

I REFER to the letter by Mr Matthew Yeo, "Unhappy? Swop places with me" (May 12). His opinion of the average Singaporean is unfortunately one apparently shared by many non-Singaporeans working here. On one hand, he praises the Government and the efficiency of our society and perhaps the biggest compliment, he wishes to make Singapore his permanent home. On the other, he disparages Singaporeans as "complaining, mollycoddled ... spoiled ... less tolerant". In doing so, he has lauded the role of the current Government in nation-building but is unaware of the role generations of average Singaporeans have played in building that same nation. The current Government has done well but they did not do it alone. Singaporeans have paid, are paying, and our children and their children will continue to pay a price in sweat, tears and sometimes blood to build and maintain this society. ...
