China an unstoppable force in table tennis

ROTTERDAM - Walking to the Ahoy Arena from Rotterdam's Zuidplein metro station for the final day of competition, a Dutch table tennis fan was overheard telling his Chinese companion yesterday: "Looks like it's going to be all China today." He would not have received any prize for his prediction, such is the stranglehold the superpowers of table tennis currently have over the sport. Chinese paddlers won all five gold medals on offer here at the World Table Tennis Championships, and all five finals in the men's and women's singles and doubles, and mixed doubles, were all-China affairs. The country took home 14 of the 20 medals handed out at this year's tournament, only three less than their haul in the 2009 tournament in Yokohama.
