"What about Singapore?" is a phrase you will hear from worldly entrepreneurs planning a base of operations for their latest venture. The question is often met with various grunts of approval from peers, for an array of rather boring reasons: Low corporate tax, government incentives, "access to China" are among the most common. However, for the consumer Internet industry - that is, the world of mega-sites such as Facebook and Youtube that are used by mainstream Internet users - Singapore represents a unique landscape for launching new brands and I am happy to say I am here in Singapore for none of the above reasons. Its size and tight community make it ideal for "stealthy" beta testing and gathering feedback, the English-speaking population means you do not have any localisation issues early on, and the community is Web-savvy and interested in trying out new things.
