An eye for detail

AS FAR as he can remember, Albert Watson has seen the world filtered through a single lens - quite literally. But even though he was born blind in his right eye, the 68-year-old Scottish photographer didn't recall having any problems with his visual handicap. "Sometimes it's a little bit annoying, sometimes you can misjudge something, but I don't really notice it," said Watson on the phone from Tribeca, New York, where he's lived for the past 34 years. That it's a non-issue for him isn't surprising. As he reminded us, in his line of work, you only need one good eye to get the job done. "When photographers are working with a camera, you're putting one eye to the viewfinder," he said. "Most cameras have one eye piece for one eye to take a picture."
