WHILE many in the local business community are dismayed at the decision by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong to leave the Cabinet, economists are confident the impact on the economy will be negligible. Most say that with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the helm, the economy will remain in good hands. As DBS Bank economist Irvin Seah notes, he has played a pivotal role since 1984 in managing the transformation of the economy. The Government is unlikely to abandon its pro-business stance, said Mr Seah, as 'that is the basis of our economic success'. Still, business leaders here point to the role that MM Lee and SM Goh have played in opening doors for local firms to expand and grow overseas.
