Thaksin's sister hopes to be first woman Thai PM

BANGKOK - Thailand's main opposition party yesterday nominated the sister of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra as its candidate for the country's top post in upcoming elections. Ms Yingluck (picture), a businesswoman, would become the country's first female Prime Minister if the opposition Pheu Thai Party wins the July 3 election and forms a government. The contest is expected to be close. The 43-year-old is seen by many as a stand-in for Thaksin and her candidacy is expected to further inflame election tensions. Thaksin was ousted in a military coup in 2006 after being accused of corruption and disrespect for the monarchy and is barred from running for office. He is living in self-imposed exile but remains popular among rural voters.
