US team to visit N. Korea on food shortage

SEOUL : A US delegation will visit North Korea next week to assess the extent of food shortages in the hungry communist state, a report said Tuesday. The entourage led by Robert King, the US special envoy on the North's human rights issues, is expected to arrive in Pyongyang next Monday, Yonhap news agency quoted a South Korean government source as saying. "The purpose of this trip will be confined to discussing the issue of food assistance and it will have no political connotations," the source was quoted as saying. The team will focus on assessing the country's exact needs and discussing ways to ensure food aid will reach people in need, the source said. Yonhap said Stephen Bosworth, the US special envoy on North Korea who arrived in Seoul Monday, would discuss the scale and timing of US food aid with South Korean officials.
