SINGAPORE - He lit up the Youth Olympic Games competition here last year with some outstanding performances for the Singapore under-15 team. Hanafi Akbar was one of the big reasons the Singapore football team thrilled the nation en route to the bronze medal. Rated as one of the most promising youngsters the country has seen in years, the 16-year-old will come under the spotlight once again as the Singapore under-16s try to win the 23rd Canon Lion City Cup, which will be held here from June 18 to 26. But to blossom into a top-class striker on the international scene, Hanafi will almost certainly have to bulk up and become stronger. The scrawny youngster with the silky attacking skills currently stands 1.67m tall and weighs in at 55kg.
