Plastic bag levy to expand to all retail stores: The levy, two years into its operation, has reduced by 90 perce...

The HK$0.50 plastic bag levy soon will apply at all of the city's 60,000 retail outlets. Once the first expansion of the program is completed, small and medium business will be able to pocket the proceeds from the bags under a proposal set forth by the government. The levy, two years into its operation, has reduced by 90 percent the number of plastic shopping bags distributed from 3,100 supermarkets, convenience stores and health and beauty chains covered in the initial phase, Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau said at a briefing at the Central Government Offices Tuesday. He said a full extension of the plan will take effect to cover all retailers with the exception of plastic food bags used for hygienic purposes. "Hong Kong is facing an imminent and serious waste problem. I call on citizens and retailers to support this meaningful waste reduction measure," Yau said....
