Tharman dismisses talk about becoming IMF chief

On the same day that he was named one of the two Deputy Prime Ministers in the new Cabinet, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam was yesterday mentioned in the international press as a possible candidate to head the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which is looking for a new chief. Asked about this yesterday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong turned to Mr Tharman and quipped, "I have not heard about the next IMF chief. Are you going there?" The light-hearted moment drew a quick response from Mr Tharman: "Fortunately, the new Cabinet has been announced and put paid to such rumours." In the new Cabinet, Mr Tharman will retain his Finance portfolio and take on the Manpower portfolio, on top of assuming the appointment of Deputy Prime Minister and chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).
