Japan tourism on slow recovery

TOKYO: In 2010, Japan recorded 8.6 million inbound travellers. However, tourist numbers have dropped since the March 11 disasters over fears of radiation. The number of arrivals from overseas to Japan halved in March, compared to a year ago. The Japan National Tourism Organisation said the main reason is the footage shown of the devastation caused by the tsunami on March 11 and the nuclear crisis that has raised concerns around the world. But it believes by mid April, tours have started to increase. Many countries have begun to lift travel advisories to Japan but the inflow of tourists is still slow. Authorities are putting their hopes in designated tourism ambassadors like Mr George Lim, a Singaporean who started on a trip around Japan early this month.
